Inspired by the article "Monica Takes Manhattan" by Vanessa Grigoriadis, Monica is a darkly comedic web series that imagines Monica Lewinsky’s life in 2001 - when she was 27 and living in New York City - as she struggles to keep global notoriety from getting in the way of creating a life for herself.
In the heyday of Sex and the City – when Palm Pilots were all the rage, and boutique cupcakes were few and far between – Monica moves into a West Village apartment, learns yoga, tours Central Park, designs handbags, attends comedy shows, and together with a powerful publicist, sets out to create an uncensored documentary about her experience as one of the most misunderstood women in the world (which aired on HBO in 2002.)
With compassion and humor, this romp of herstorical fiction tells the story of an average young woman who makes a bold choice, not to run from the cameras and hide from the public eye, but instead to utilize media – the very weapon once used to disgrace her – as a tool for self expression, in order to step into the spotlight and demand to be seen as she really is… as Monica.
Premieres online February 23, 2015.
